How to Store Your Whiskey Properly

Many of us really enjoy our Whiskey and Bourbons, and many of us are not purchasing “cheap” Whisky or Bourbons. When you’re investing in your spirits like I do it’s important to know how to make sure we keep our spirits stored properly so that we can enjoy it for years to come.

I for my part have Whiskeys that I’ve had literally for years, some over a decade and anytime I go to enjoy them they are still delicious. Even my 15, 25, and 50 year old Whiskeys and Bourbons. Whiskey is a delicious and versatile spirit that can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or mixed in cocktails. However, it is important to store whiskey properly in order to preserve its flavor and quality.

  • Store your whiskey in a cool, dark place. Whiskey should be stored at a temperature between 55 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Exposure to heat and light can cause the whiskey to evaporate and lose its flavor.
  • Store your whiskey upright. Storing whiskey upright helps to prevent the cork from drying out and allowing air to enter the bottle.
  • Keep your whiskey away from direct sunlight. Exposure to sunlight can cause the whiskey to oxidize and develop a vinegary taste.
  • Store your whiskey in a closed container. Storing whiskey in a closed container helps to prevent it from absorbing flavors from other foods or drinks.
  • Avoid storing your whiskey in the refrigerator or freezer. Storing whiskey in the refrigerator or freezer can cause it to become cloudy and lose its flavor.
